Why do humans have chins when no other animals do?

The leading modern view is that the chin is not an adaptation with a purpose but a byproduct: as human faces shrank and retreated over the last thirty thousand years, the base of the jaw was left projecting forward. Older theories about chewing and speech have largely failed testing.
