Question 1

Why does my childhood bedroom look smaller now that I am an adult?

Accepted Answer

It is not because your memory exaggerated the room. The brain measures space relative to your body size, so as a child your smaller body made the room genuinely register as larger. Now your bigger body takes a new, equally accurate reading, and the walls rescale.

Question 2

Does the brain measure the world in body size instead of real units?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Perception is relative, not absolute. Distances, doorways, and ceilings are judged against your body's reach, height, and stride rather than in fixed meters, so the same room feels different to a small body and a large one.

Question 3

What experiment proved that body size changes how big the world looks?

Accepted Answer

A 2011 Karolinska Institutet study by van der Hoort and Ehrsson used virtual reality and synchronized touch to make volunteers feel they owned doll-sized or giant bodies. In a doll body the room looked larger; in a giant body it looked smaller, proving perceived body size scales perceived world size.
