Question 1

Why does orange juice taste bad after brushing your teeth?

Accepted Answer

It is caused by sodium lauryl sulfate, the detergent that makes toothpaste foam. This soap temporarily disrupts the fatty membranes of your taste receptor cells, muting sweetness and turning the sour edge of citrus into a bitter, metallic taste. The mint is not responsible.

Question 2

How long does the toothpaste taste effect last?

Accepted Answer

The effect is entirely temporary. As saliva flushes the detergent away and your receptor membranes recover, the worst eases within about ten minutes and taste returns fully to normal within roughly thirty minutes.

Question 3

Is it the mint in toothpaste that ruins the taste of juice?

Accepted Answer

No. Yale researchers tested a flavorless detergent solution with no mint at all and still saw sweetness collapse and sour flip to bitter. The culprit is sodium lauryl sulfate, the foaming agent, which disables taste receptors rather than clashing with the juice.
