Question 1

Why does smell trigger memories more strongly than other senses?

Accepted Answer

Smell is the only sense that skips the thalamus, the brain's sensory relay station, and connects directly to the amygdala and hippocampus, the centers of emotion and memory. This unfiltered route makes scent-triggered memories feel more emotional and more immersive than memories cued by sight or sound.

Question 2

Why do smells bring back childhood memories specifically?

Accepted Answer

Research by Willander and Larsson found that odor-cued memories tend to originate in early childhood, roughly ages six to ten, before language was fully formed. Because smell never relied on words to encode experience, it can retrieve memories from a period that verbal and visual cues cannot reach.

Question 3

What part of the brain connects smell to emotion?

Accepted Answer

The olfactory bulb wires almost directly into the limbic system, particularly the amygdala, which processes emotion, and the entorhinal cortex, which is the gateway to the memory-building hippocampus. This connection happens in a single synaptic step, without passing through the thalamus.
